The Bullerby children below was another one that really still sticks in my mind. Lovely stories about the children who all live in a little hamlet and get up to lots of adventures. Lisa is one of the children and she had a new bedroom for her birthday once. Her family do her a lovely new bedroom so she doesn't have to share with her brother and it's lovely-her delight is described so well. The simplicity yet thought in the idea still makes me think about excess giftage today!
I had a Pookie at Christmas time story which I loved. Pookie had a little scarf parcel which I always envied and, of course wings but, best of all, at Christmas his friend-Belinda- made a plum pudding which I thought was terribly sophisticated at the time as she also wrapped it in a special muslin cloth a bit like aforementioned parcel he carries. The intro in each book always starts with " Hello, everybody I’m Pookie, the rabbit with wings! Once upon a time my wings were little silly things. Everyone teased me about them, so I set out to seek my fortune. I had lots of adventures, then I got lost in a snowstorm – but Belinda saved me that cold winter’s night and kissed my wings. I live with Belinda now in Bluebell Wood and have lots of wonderful adventures. I do hope you enjoy reading this one!" You can see, from the front cover, what calamity befalls the little rabbit having a family picnic. This was always a favourite but it got lost somewhere along the way;I was really pleased when I found another copy for us after such a long time and remembered it all. For a train loving uncle and his boys this was the perfect book from a well travelled book loving Grandad who picked it up on his travels. The story is now very well thumbed in our family and is rather uplifting (whether you're a caboose or not!).
