who reminded me about the beautifully illustrated Spiderwick Chronicles which reminded me of the amazing field guide above-a wonderful companion to the stories. It has those lovely line drawings in abundance with tiny details about the fantastical creatures you can find if you're lucky (or perhaps unlucky ) enough to find a hag stone to see a whole new world. It also reminded me of a favourite book of mine about Gnomes which is in a similar 'sketchbook' style which, I think, makes it even more appealing.

Tilly was so inspired by the field guide (having not even seen it) so she made her own. She sat for over an hour... Then played all afternoon with a polystyrene hag stone she had made with a rucksack of rubbish on her back to poison the goblins. Imagination in abundance.. And all from a book!
